The roar engulfs Prestbury Park when the runners for the opening race, the Supreme Novice Hurdle, are released into battle. Like any form of entertainment, that only serves as a taster of what’s to come.

After the Juveniles do their thing, its then down to the elders to take centre stage in the Champion Hurdle. The show-stopping Hurricane Fly will be popular with the Irish there – he looks the Festival banker and should deliver the goods. Throw in another five Graded races and you probably have the most tantalising days racing of the season.

The Wednesday, otherwise known as Ladies Day, has all the glitz and glamour the title suggests. Off the track the women dazzle the hearts of many, whilst on it the Queen Mother Champion Chase creates a stunner of its own.

Sizing Europe rates as the likeliest victor this year, but young pretender Finian’s Rainbow should not be counted out.

If Champagne and strawberries doesn’t float your boat then no doubt a nice cold pint of Guinness on St Patrick’s Day will. The Craic will also be in full flow. The Irish are out in force to celebrate on the Thursday, and you can guarantee, the Emerald Isle will land one of the big races on the day. Probably not the feature though, as the World Hurdle should be gobbled up for the fourth year running by the stupendous Big Buck’s. It should be easy as one, two, three, four. If he gets beat then plenty of people will be eating their hats.

If you do attend just remember to bring the luck of the Irish with you.

Then last but not least, it’s the big one, the pinnacle of National Hunt Racing – the race that everyone wants a part off but only a select view can win. Cheltenham Gold Cup day on the Friday is really what the Cheltenham Festival is all about. First class racing watched by the world, played out in front a passionate audience, who are all striving to find the winner of the most prestigious race in the calendar.

This year’s renewal has a star-studded line-up, literally, as Kauto Star bids to become the first horse to regain the Gold Cup for a second time. A third win in the race would certainly make him one of, if not the, best steeplechaser of all-time.

The infamous Kauto Star flags will be flying high and the roar if he strides to Gold Cup victory, will be loud enough to be heard all the way around the world. Defending champion Long Run stands in his way and won’t go down without a fight however.

A stunning week lies in prospect.

And whether you’re a punter, a purist, a professional or just a general sports fan, the Cheltenham Festival should not be missed.

Let battle commence.
